Jamie Thraves made short films and university. He used an award winning short film as a 'calling card' to get a 'foot in the door' with the video production company Factory Films. He began by shooting three very low budget music videos costing around £5,000 each.
Process.
- A 'commissioner' from a record label sends a track to 5-10 directors.
- The directors then each submit a treatment.
- At this stage no directors are paid.
- The director that has submitted the 'best' treatment is then commissioned to make the video.
- Then the director is paid.
This means that rejected directors get nothing showing that this is a tough business.
Jamie Thraves submitted treatments for his two best known videos and each was accepted.
These were 'Just' by Radiohead with a £100,000 budget shot in three days and 'The Scientist' by Coldplay with a £200,000 budget also shot in three days.
This video is disjunctured however 'can't get the stink off' in the lyrics is represented through the man having a bath.
This video was inspired by the lyric 'going back to the start'. Jamie believed that this was a good lyric to base the video on, however, nothing else in the video relates to the song or the lyrics.
His tips are to use the lyrics but try not to be too literal and most important use the emotion of the lyrics.
